SLH Pomegranate 石榴
Key Description: Pomegranate is the size of a large orange, obscurely six-sided, with a smooth leathery skin that ranges from brownish yellow to red; within, it is divided into several chambers containing many thin transparent arils of reddish, juicy pulp, each surrounding an angular elongated seed. It is high in dietary fibre, folic acid, vitamin C, and vitamin K. The juicy arils of the fruit are eaten fresh, and the juice is the source of grenadine syrup, used in flavourings and liqueurs.
Health Benefits
Pomegranate contains a variety of chemicals that might have antioxidant effects. Some preliminary research suggests that chemicals in pomegranate juice might slow the progression of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and possibly fight cancer cells. But it is not known if pomegranate has these effects when people drink the juice.
Pomegranate arils are packed with nutrients and antioxidants, substances that can help prevent or delay damage within the cells. Pomegranate juice has three times as many antioxidants as other antioxidant-rich beverages, such as green tea and red wine.
The pomegranate arils have plenty of other nutrients, too, and are a great addition to your daily recommended serving of fruit. A ½ cup serving offers:
